Behind the Brand: Marysia

Marysia Dobrzanska Reeves founded MARYSIA, the luxury lifestyle brand, in 2009. 

The Polish-born former ballerina and longtime surfer spent most of her youth wearing leotards and wetsuits. It wasn’t until she began to explore her interest in design that she discovered she could translate her early uniforms into a high fashion swim and resortwear label. Following her studies at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles and an internship with Milly in New York, Marysia launched her eponymous brand from Charleston, South Carolina. After winning the Charleston Fashion Week Emerging Designer competition, she began production in a couture factory and quickly sold the collection to major wholesale accounts nationwide.

Within a few years, the company relocated to New York, and later to LA where the brand is now based. Made from premium Italian fabrics, the swim and resortwear is cut and sewn by hand in a couture factory. While scallop-edged swimwear has become her signature, Marysia continues to expand the brand offerings with new fabrications, design details and an expanded collection of dresses and separates. With a focus on vacation wear, Marysia designs with travel in mind – from Harbour Island to Biarritz, Antibes to Milos – creating collections a woman can wear from day into night. 

The brand has attracted celebrity fans including Oscar-winning actresses Lupita Nyong’o, Gwyneth Paltrow, January Jones, and global fashion influencers like Lauren Santo Domingo, Leandra Medine and Evangeline Smyrniotaki, among many others. The fashion industry has embraced the brand as well.  Marysia was selected among the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s top 20 in 2015 and was inducted as a CFDA member in 2018. In the Spring of 2019, Marysia opened her flagship store in Soho, New York. The brand has collaborated on capsule collections Jenni Kayne, MatchesFashion.com, and fellow designer Jonathan Cohen. Marysia has been featured in leading fashion and lifestyle publications including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Architectural Digest landing on the covers of many US and international publications. The line is sold  globally in over 200 doors including Matches, Le Bon Marche, Lane Crawford, Moda Operandi, Selfridges, goop, and Net-A-Porter. Marysia lives in Venice Beach, California with her husband Nathaniel, the company’s CFO, and their two daughters.
